Title: VSRC Medical Mission Brings Aid To Typhoon ONDOY (Ketsana) Victims
Description:

As 2009 comes to a close, we also close one of the most challenging chapters of our lives. Many of us were greatly struck by Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana), and the devastation is still strongly felt to this day.

Every year, Dr. Verallo-Rowell organizes and participates in a medical mission to communities in need in the Philippine provinces. So she was thrilled when the doctors, nurses and staff at VSRC suggested doing a medical mission for (name of community), one of the worst hit and least served communities of the typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) disaster. “Of course,” said Dr. Verallo-Rowell, “we must! Get help from pharmaceutical and other companies so we can maximize the help we can give.”

The VSRC team mobilized, led by Nurse Rein Ananca. The show of charity was impressive: we managed to get sponsorship in the form of transportation and medicines from ABS-CBN Foundation’s Sagip Kapamilya as well as other support from VMV Hypoallergenics, EuroChem, Manila Water, Microlab, Leopharma, Wyeth, and Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri.

On October 24, 2009, the VSRC team and other VMV Group employees plowed their way through mud, heat and still-standing water to Dela Paz Elementary School in Biñan, Laguna. Stranded flood victims temporarily called the place home, a welcome shelter even as they maneuvered through its flooded grounds and squeezed into cramped classrooms.

In these dire conditions, VSRC provided free medical consultations, basic care and medications to over 1,000 people and hundreds of families who were suffering from diarrhea, fever, severe skin damage and other problems brought about by constant exposure to floodwater.

We’d like to thank ABS-CBN Foundation’s Sagip Kapamilya as well as other support from VMV Hypoallergenics, EuroChem, Manila Water, Microlab, Leopharma, Wyeth, and Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri for making possible this heartfelt mission of aid.
